Mzansi's Thebe Magugu steals the spotlight with Lauryn Hill and Wyclef Jean at DStv Delicious Festival

American rapper and musician performed at the DStv Delicious International Food and Music Festival and wore local designer Thebe Magugu.

The international acts who perform at the DStv Delicious International Food and Music Festival often use it a runway to done South African designers.

American musician and rapper Lauryn Hill and Haitian rapper and singer Wyclef Jean for their electric performances wore one of South Africa’s top designers Thebe Magugu.

Hill wore a custom strirking Sotho-inspired red and black suit, with with ostrich feather sleeves and Isicholo headpiec. The print is part of the Mafeteng Capsule which launched in September. 

Jean wore the Sisterhood V-Neck Sweater, which draws inspiration from collegiate sports-team staples, knitted in a midnight-blue wool-blend with white banding on the neckline, cuff and hem, which all frame a scaled-up image of the Thebe Magugu sisterhood emblem.

This is not the first time, Magugu’s designs have light up the DStv Delicious International Food and Music Festival stage in 2022, Nigerian superstar Burna Boy wore a custom Thebe Magugu Sisterhood Bandana Technical Bomber trimmed with dark red ostrich feathers, paired with a matching Sisterhood Bandana Crepe Safari shirt.

The Kimberley-born designer has made an name for himself on the international fashion scene. He was the first African designer to win the prestigious LVMH Prize in 2019, which saw him receive a €300 000 grant and a year-long mentorship from executives at the French luxury conglomerate.

The local fashion on stage did not stop at Magugu, African luxury brand MaXhosa Africa dressed the Hill’s backing vocals and dancers.

Hill’s performance included her sons YG Marley and Zion Marley. Day two of DStv Delicious International Food and Music Festival had performances from South Africa’s top musicians Lira, Mandisi Dyantyis, Zoë Modiga, Oskido and Joyous Celebration Rewind.
