Dubai, where the sun never takes a break, is currently experiencing temperatures soaring around 40°C (degrees).
Yet, enter any major shopping mall, and you might be greeted by racks of winter jackets, puffer coats, and thermal wear. This perplexing seasonal mismatch has left both residents and visitors scratching their heads.
Kris Fade, the Australian-Lebanese radio presenter and reality TV star of "Dubai Bling", recently took to social media to voice his bewilderment. In a video, he questioned the logic behind selling winter clothing in the midst of Dubai's scorching summer.
He humorously remarked, "We live in the UAE, Dubai, I live. The temperature is about 40 degrees outside. I walk into the stores, and there's only winter gear. Winter jackets, winter pants, I'm going to the beach!"
He further expressed his confusion,
"When I asked them if they have any summer gear, they said, 'Oh no, we're in winter season.' I'm like, where? For who? Who is buying this stuff? Are we selling for tourists? Please, we need more summer stuff in our stores."
Now, for anyone who’s ever melted walking around Dubai, you know this is hilarious. Dubai’s “winter season” apparently starts somewhere between never and never-never, making these frosty puffer jackets a total fashion hazard.
Seriously, trying on a coat in 40-degree heat? That’s basically a free sauna session.
Dubai's retail industry operates on a global fashion calendar, which often doesn't align with the local climate.
While the city bakes under the summer sun, international fashion trends dictate that winter collections start appearing in stores as early as April.
This leads to a curious situation where residents are offered woollen coats and scarves while they're still in beachwear.
One resident recounted their shopping experience, "Exactly my thoughts! I was out all summer and my daughter grew sizes. I went to the mall to get more clothes, and there were all winter puffy jackets."
While another shared a different perspective: "50 to 60 percent of the workforce in Dubai are indoors. Most people work 9-5 with the air conditioning blasting, it's freezing. The beach? Maybe on weekends, maybe! Clearly, you don't know the average person in Dubai."
While the rest of us are melting outside, this comment highlights the unsung struggle of the office-bound crowd, people actually needing those puffer jackets to survive the Arctic blast happening in malls and offices across the city.
That “average Dubai person” isn’t lounging on the beach sipping coconut water or Long Island's - they’re sitting in a cubicle, shivering, with the AC cranked to arctic tundra levels.
One visitor wrote: “This is my first full winter in Dubai. Coming from Scotland, I couldn’t be more confused recently at the shops!”
Bless them. Imagine stepping off a plane from a chilly, grey country expecting Dubai to be… well, hot, and then walking into a mall full of puffy jackets and thermal wear.
Your brain says “summer, sun, beach!” but the stores are screaming “winter wonderland!”
What have we learned from Dubai’s baffling winter-gear-in-summer trend? For travellers, it’s confusing. For locals walking around outside, it’s laughable.
And for office warriors trapped under arctic-level aircon, those puffy jackets are basically life insurance.
