A teenage boy remains missing after he got into difficulty while swimming with two other boys at Jabula Beach, St Lucia on New Year's Day.
The iSimangaliso Wetland Park Authority said it was alleged that three 14-year-old boys from Hluhluwe were swimming without adult supervision when the incident occurred.
“The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) responded promptly and rescued two of the boys and they are currently receiving medical attention at the hospital. Sadly, one boy remains missing.”
ISimangaliso said that search efforts were continuing and it extended its heartfelt sympathies to the affected family and community during this difficult time.
“The iSimangaliso Wetland Park urges the public to prioritise safety by following lifeguards’ instructions, ensuring children are supervised at all times, avoid alcohol consumption at the beach, and adhere to park rules.”
Meanwhile dozens of beachgoers flocked to Durban beaches on New Year's Day however cooler conditions meant crowds were not as large as was seen on the December 16 holiday.
KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi and Premier Thamsanqa Ntuli also did a walkabout along the Durban beachfront yesterday.
Jokingly, Ntuli told the media that the visit was not an easy one because, as premier, people could not recognise him, but with Mkhwanazi, people were chanting “Mkhwanazi”.
He added that the response to Mkhwanazi demonstrated that the police's good work is being recognised by the people of the province.
