As we look back on 2024, it is impossible to deny that it has been, for the vast majority of ordinary South Africans, an Annus horribilis.
This year has been marked by persistent challenges: rampant crime, staggering unemployment, and the ever-widening chasm of poverty that grips so many of our communities.
The struggles faced by our citizens are profound and often overwhelming, yet amid this torrent of hardship, there flickers a beacon of optimism for 2025 – a year that holds the promise of turning the corner in addressing the social issues that plague our nation.
While acknowledging the failures that have characterised this year, there is also much to take pride in regarding how South Africa has positioned itself on the international stage. Our country’s courageous stance, exemplified by our role in bringing the state of Israel to court over gross human rights violations in Gaza, reflects our ongoing commitment to justice and human dignity. As a nation, we have shown that our principles extend beyond our borders, standing up for those who have been silenced.
Adding to this pride are our entertainers and sporting figures, who have risen to prominence and showcased the resilience and talent of our nation.
Yet, this sense of national pride must propel us into action. As we step into 2025, we must urge our Government of National Unity to prioritise improving the material conditions of black poor people.
I challenge the government and Police Minister Senzo Mchunu to take the fight against crime seriously.
As we close the chapter on 2024, I send out an impassioned plea for the lot of South Africans to improve, even if only slightly. We yearn for a 2025 brimming with opportunities, one in which every citizen can find purpose and fulfillment. Let us embrace this coming year with hope and determination, striving for a more equitable society and a future where all South Africans can thrive. In wishing everyone a prosperous and productive new year, let us remember that together, we hold the power to effect change.
May 2025 be a year of transformation, resilience, success and unity for our beloved South Africa.
