After two decades at the helm, Christian Horner’s storied reign at Red Bull has come to a dramatic close. The mastermind behind six Constructors’ Championships and eight Drivers’ titles, Horner transformed Red Bull Racing from upstarts into Formula 1’s dominant force.
Now, with the team reeling from a troubled 2025 season and Max Verstappen’s title defence faltering, the baton passes to Frenchman Laurent Mekies — a seasoned figure stepping into the hottest seat in the paddock.
In 2023, Mekies rejoined Red Bull and led the Racing Bulls team, even delivering a handful of strong results this season before his promotion to the top job.
Oliver Mintzlaff, chief of Red Bull’s sporting projects, said in a statement: “We would like to thank Horner for his exceptional work over the last 20 years.
"With his tireless commitment, experience, expertise and innovative thinking, he has been instrumental in establishing Red Bull Racing as one of the most successful and attractive teams in Formula 1. Thank you for everything, Christian — you will forever remain an important part of our team’s history.”
In Mekies’ place, Alan Permane has been appointed to oversee the Racing Bulls team, guiding young drivers Isack Hadjar and Liam Lawson.
Horner’s exit comes during a turbulent season for the energy drink maker, struggling in both the Drivers’ and Constructors’ title races due to an imbalanced and underperforming car when compared to the likes of Mercedes and McLaren.
This has cast a shadow over Max Verstappen’s hopes of equalling Michael Schumacher’s record of five consecutive world titles.
Mekies now steps into the hot seat, tasked with stabilising the team and improving the RB21’s floor and aerodynamic package mid-season. His first race in charge will be no easy introduction — the coliseum of motorsport: Spa-Francorchamps in Belgium. Thankfully, he has a two-week break to prepare.
