The first-ever Lexus GX has landed in South Africa, and like its larger LX sibling it aims to blend luxury and impressive off-road capability.
It's loosely based on the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado, but differentiated in numerous ways, including design, features and powertrain.
To that end, all Lexus GX models in South Africa are fitted with a 3.5-litre, twin-turbo petrol engine that delivers 260kW and 650Nm.
South Africans can choose between two basic flavours, with the off-road-focused GX 550 Overtrail priced at R1,766,000 and more luxurious GX 550 SE retailing at R1,829,000.
The Lexus GX is based on the Toyota Prado, but with numerous design differences.

Created in tandem with the Prado, Lexus says the new GX was developed in the “harshest environments” around the world. It also features a new E-KDSS electronic system that’s said to improve traction on a wide variety of surfaces.
The GX is equipped with a full-time four-wheel drive system complete with a Torsen locking centre differential and an electronic transfer case with low range.
The Overtrail ups the ante with a locking rear differential, as well as all-terrain tyres and more electronic gizmos in the form of Crawl Control and Multi-Terrain Select.
The Overtrail is also distinguished by a unique exterior design package as well as specially designed seats that were designed to minimise head tossing on rough roads.
The cabin of the new Lexus GX features a 12.3-inch (31.2cm) digital instrument cluster and a 14-inch (35.5cm) central screen.

The SE gains a Mark Levinson sound system, panoramic view monitor, digital rear-view mirror, heated steering wheel and Semi-Aniline leather seat upholstery among other additions.
