Idols finalist Lloyd Cele, of Phoenix, Durban, may have come off second best when the votes were tallied on Tuesday night, but he did not go home empty-handed.
In an unprecedented gesture of friendship, eventual winner Elvis Blue and L’loyd had decided before Tuesday night’s finalé to share the R500 000 cash prize.
Elvis (born Jan Hoogendyk), a 30-year-old from George, garnered the majority of the total of 2 398 962 valid votes cast in the final vote of Idols Season 6, to beat the Durbanite who has become his friend over the course of the season.
Elvis walked away with a package of prizes including a recording contract with the Universal Music Group, a car, home-theatre system, and vouchers for music equipment and clothing.
M-Net head of channel Pierre Cloete said the sheer number of people who auditioned and the impressive level of talent in the top 10 showed South Africa was ready for season 7 “as soon as possible”.
Idols Season 7 will hold auditions in February and March 2011, but this season will boast a few novel twists. Find details at www.facebook/idolsSA.- The Mercury
