A gangster in witness protection has told the Bellville Regional Court that a policeman brought him a cellphone, then a burger and a dagga parcel during a sting operation.
Shafiek Staggie was testifying on Friday in the corruption case against former sergeant Willie Marcus.
The State alleges that Marcus, while working in the cells where Staggie was kept – on December 1, 2009 – was paid R100 in return for handing Staggie the dagga and the burger.
Staggie told the court he saw Marcus “bring things inside” for other prisoners before he had agreed to bring in items from Staggie’s visitors.
“I gave him R50 or R100,” he said, adding that later he reported the deal to Lieutenant-Colonel Hein Cockrill because “it was the right thing to tell Cocky. Even if someone brings in a small thing, it can put our lives in danger.”
The case was postponed to Friday.
