Johannesburg - Former Bafana Bafana coach Stanley “Screamer” Tshabalala is facing charges of assault, intimidation and sexual assault.

He appeared at the Roodepoort Magistrate’s Court on Thursday to answer to the assault charge.

Police spokesman Warrant Officer Kay Makhubela said the charge was in relation to an incident that took place on Tuesday at the Dobsonville Stadium in Soweto during the Moroka Swallows and Orlando Pirates match.

“He had a fight with another spectator… it started when he fought with the woman who was seated behind him. The woman’s boyfriend intervened and Tshabalala started assaulting the boyfriend.

“It’s alleged that while they were fighting, Tshabalala touched the private parts of the woman,” Makhubela said.

The former coach was arrested on the same day and was released on warning and instructed to present himself to court on Thursday. “He appeared for the assault charge. The other charges will be added after the prosecutor has consulted with witnesses,” Makhubela said.

The case will continue on March 22.

It is not the first time Tshabalala has been in hot water. In 1992, he was suspended after admitting to having assaulted Sunday Times writer Sy Lerman after a story appeared in the newspaper with the headline “Stop screaming, start coaching!”
