Johannesburg - Vogan Smith was only 17 years old. His family stood and fought tears outside the Eldorado Park power station, not 100m from his body. He had been electrocuted while trying to steal cable wires.

A large explosion was heard at the power station shortly after 5pm on Tuesday.

Vogan’s step-aunt was the last family member who saw him alive. She said that before he left home, he had asked for pliers.

She said that later, a boy who had been with Vogan came to her and simply said: “Vogan was shocked and he’s lying there.”

Eldorado Park SAPS spokesman Captain Philemon Khorombi confirmed Vogan had died while trying to cut cables inside the power station.

“It’s a case of cable theft,” he said.
