Cape Town - A police constable was shot dead early on Sunday morning, allegedly after an argument with one of his neighbours in Tafelsig, Mitchells Plain.

Police spokesman Andrè Traut said the man, whose name he could not release, was 29 years old and was based at the Cape Town Central police station. Traut said the incident happened on Dassenberg Road at about 1.45am.

“We have reason to believe that the incident was preceded by an argument between the victim and the suspect, who fled the scene and who has yet to be arrested”.

It is also suspected that the victim and the suspect knew each other, Traut said in a statement on Sunday.

When the Cape Argus arrived at the house on Sunday a ballistics team was still gathering evidence, while neighbours looked on.

Members of the policeman’s family, who live across the road from where the incident took place, refused to speak to the Cape Argus.

However, a woman who lives in the house where it happened, Charmaine van Wyk, was sitting on the pavement outside her home on Sunday.

She said that she had been woken up in the early hours by someone who told her that “there is someone lying dead in your house”.

“So when I woke up and saw the body I just walked out and went to buy a bottle of wine,” she said.

Van Wyk said she did not hear the argument or shots being fired and refused to speak further.

Traut said: “The circumstances surrounding the matter are currently under investigation.”

Last week, 30-year-old Constable Thabo Mdzwana was shot in Lwandle in Strand.

Two men, aged 30 and 36, were arrested for the murder.
