Durban - The police have arrested a third suspect in the case of the Pietermaritzburg doctor who was gunned down outside his surgery in Chota Motal Road (Greytown Road).

Dr Bhavish Sewram, 33, was killed on May 13 at about 7pm, apparently after closing up his rooms for the day.

Provincial police spokesman, Colonel Vincent Mdunge, said the man had been arrested in Pietermaritzburg on Friday afternoon as he was making his way to the gym.

He was expected to appear in the magistrate’s court on Monday, said Mdunge.

“After he has appeared, he will be given a remand date and will then be linked with the other two suspects who have already made their first appearance in court,” he said.

Sabelo Dlamini, 24, and Mfaniseni Nxumalo, 34, were arrested at their homes in the Masson informal settlement in Copesville, Pietermaritzburg last Sunday by city detectives and the provincial task team.

Dlamini and Nxumalo appeared in the regional court last Tuesday. They spent hours with the police and the magistrate behind closed doors, before they appeared.

The two were handcuffed and wore leg irons when they appeared in court.

They are expected to appear again on Monday.

It is alleged that Dlamini and Nxumalo shot Sewram three times before fleeing.

Mdunge said the police’s investigations were continuing.
