EFF’s minor victory in first poll test

Limpopo - In the two months of its existence as a political party, Julius Malema’s Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) has taken the University of Limpopo by storm.

It came second in this week’s student representative council (SRC) elections amid fears it might collaborate with two other organisations for the leadership.

The EFF’s University of Limpopo branch won four of the 16 seats, with the ANC-aligned South African Student Congress winning the polls with seven seats in Wednesday’s elections.

The ANC Youth League came third with three seats, while the Students Christian Organisation took two.

It was the first electoral test for the EFF, which plans to contest next year’s general elections.

Malema has vowed to replace President Jacob Zuma and implement radical socio-economic policies such as nationalisation and expropriation of land without compensation.

A recent survey said he enjoyed the support of a quarter of the country’s youth.

Malema was on campus to woo supporters.
