Appeal for counselling after brutal attack

Johannesburg - A Krugersdorp woman survived being stabbed, choked with an electrical cord and raped in her home on Monday prompting her husband to appeal for counselling to help them deal with the brutal attack.

Shortly after his request on Tuesday morning, Gauteng Premier Nomvula Mokonyane promised to help the couple.

“Yesterday morning, I left home at 6 as usual and, around 7.45, I got a call from a neighbour saying I must get home because my wife has been stabbed,” *Nyembezi Mini said.

He said she had been stabbed and raped and had fainted after being choked with an electrical cord in their home in Kagiso.

“Emotionally, we need someone to help,” he said.

Mini said the neighbours had told him the name of the person who had attacked his wife and said he lived in the area.

He had passed this information on to the police.

In an appeal to TalkRadio 702, Mini also called for help in Kagiso because he couldn’t afford to travel.

TalkRadio 702’s John Robbie said they had been flooded with offers of help, including a call from Mokonyane, who comes from Kagiso.

“It’s a sad thing, we need to condemn it,” Mokonyane said.

She said they would provide any counselling the couple needed.

Mokonyane said she had asked acting Gauteng provincial commissioner Lieutenant-General Joel Mothiba to investigate why the police had not offered the couple counselling after the incident.

The Krugersdorp police spokeswoman, Constable Gloria Maswanganye, said the woman’s assailant had stabbed her in the back of the neck with a pair of scissors.

She said no arrests had been made, but the police had a lead on a 22-year-old man and a case of attempted murder and rape had been opened.

The police were also unsure of the motive behind the attack.
