Cash and carry raided over stolen stock

Pretoria - A popular cash and carry shop in Marabastad was closed for more than three hours on Monday after police pounced on the business for allegedly buying and selling stolen stock.

This came soon after police broke open a lock to a garage at a storage facility in WF Nkomo (formerly Church) Street and found a storeroom filled with suspected stolen goods believed to be worth hundreds of thousands of rand.

Hawks spokesman Paul Rama-loko said police flying squad and Hawks members were following up information on a truck that was hijacked last week in Pretoria. It is believed the truck was stocked with products worth about R700 000.

Inside the garage were boxes of home threatre systems, DVD players, boxes filled with female waxing products and feminine wipes, shampoo, hand sanitiser, hair oil products, and slimming teas.

It was evident that the goods had been inside the garage for a period of time as dust covered the boxes and free standing goods.

The goods transported in the hijacked truck had apparently already been moved, some of which had allegedly bought by the cash and carry outlet in Marabastad.

Ramaloko said further investigation led police to the store where they found powder milk and a brand of chips. At the time of going to print police were still following up leads on the whereabouts of the rest of the items in the truck. Cooking oil, tinned fish and other groceries were said to be on the list.
