Suspects in four hijackings questioned

Johannesburg - A day after authorities promised Joburg residents they were in charge despite a series of brazen hijackings in Jeppestown, a group of men have been hauled in for questioning.

Police said two of the four hijacked vehicles, a Toyota Corolla and a Toyota Rav4, were recovered on Wednesday.

The Rav4 hijacking made headlines this week after CCTV footage of the daylight robbery went viral. Four armed men attacked the car on Saturday afternoon. They also stole cellphones and about R10 000 in cash.

And now four men, between the ages of 25 and 45, have been taken in for questioning.

But while the police press statement said the men were “likely to be charged for several violent crimes, including the hijacking of a Toyota Rav”, no actual arrests had been made as yet.

“Should there be any update, a further statement will be issued,” said police spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Lungelo Dlamini.

He said further investigations were continuing as more people might have been involved. It is believed that all four hijackings might have been committed by the same gang.

“Some of the footage is still being analysed to identify the suspects, as well weapons used during the hijackings,” he added.
