Athlone stand-off: family vows action

Cape Town - The cops who shot a man during a tense stand-off at his Athlone home have been cleared of wrongdoing.

But the family of Michael Volkwyn is not happy with the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) verdict, and plans to seek legal advice.

In May, police were called to remove 13 dogs from Volkwyn’s house in Albemarle Street, Hazendal, after his backyard tenant complained the animals had attacked her.

The 61-year-old recluse died from a gunshot wound to the head.

Police say Volkwyn committed suicide when officers stormed the house.

But his family refused to believe that, and demanded an investigation.

His sister Barbara claims they handed over video footage to police which shows Michael shot in self-defence, after two shots were fired at him.

“First they said only two bullets were discharged at him, but I found another and they also found another. This is not in the report,” she tells the Daily Voice.

Ipid completed it’s report last week, and said investigators looked at crime scene photos and videos, interviewed a ballistics expert, Volkwyn’s neighbours and police task force members.

“The complaint is unsubstantiated as no evidence can be found to support the allegation that was made or there is insufficient evidence. We regard this matter as finalised and we will close our file,” said Ipid.

Ipid says a task force member shot one of the dogs outside the back door after cops broke down the door and the dogs charged them.

Barbara accused police of withholding information, and said the family plan to take further steps.

“I promise there will be justice for my brother,” she says.
