Hijacking leads to dramatic crash

Cape Town - A man drove into a shack in Philippi after being stabbed in the head and shot by hijackers.

It is believed that the 35-year-old victim was attacked at a traffic light by an armed gang who stabbed him repeatedly in the head and body before shooting him.

He managed to drive away from them, but crashed into the two-room shack a few metres away.

He died on the scene in Lansdowne Road, Philippi.

The shack’s owner, Musa Khuili, said he was fast sleep when a loud noise woke him up.

The vehicle crashed through a gate before ramming into the shack around 1.30am on Sunday morning.

“I heard a loud bang and people arguing outside, minutes later it was quiet,” said Khuili.

The fearful man decided to investigate.

“I slowly walked out of my room, and found this car stuck in the front area of the shack.

“It had destroyed the front part and stopped on its way to my bedroom,” said Khuili.

“The man was lying there outside his car, I only came to know later that he is dead.

“I don’t know how the man was shot, but people claim that the man was being hijacked and shot at.”

Shocked residents came to help the man.

A 27-year-old neighbour who asked to remain anonymous says she heard the hijackers argue, and went out after they had left.

“This road is long and sometimes motorists are intercepted at the traffic lights,” she told the Daily Voice.

“Criminals rob or hijack cars here before they run off to the shacks nearby.”

Police spokesperson Constable Noloyiso Rwexana says no arrests have been made yet.

“A murder case has been opened and circumstances surrounding this incident are under investigation” he said.
