Cape Town - A man accused of brutally murdering a young mother in Bredasdorp claims three other men are responsible for the crime.
Delwigo Ward, 19, who smiled and waved at his family as he entered Bredasdorp Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, handed his lawyer a note, which allegedly contains the names of the men he claims are responsible for the attack on Sulnita Manho on April 2.
Ward also abandoned his bail application.
Magistrate Luddick Sass ordered at a previous appearance that a report about Ward’s stay at Stikland Mental Hospital be handed in on Tuesday.
However, the facility refused to release the report without Ward’s consent.
Sass on Tuesday ruled that Ward now be sent to the Valkenberg facility instead.
Sulnita disappeared shortly after she, two cousins and a friend, visited a shebeen several metres away from where the murder took place.
The 22-year old had been sexually assaulted, a bottle was pushed up her vagina and she was tied with a rope around her neck to a safety gate.
Ward was arrested at his home a few hours after the attack.
His mother Dinah Ward, 47, said she was relieved her youngest son “is bringing out the truth”.
According to her, one of the men implicated by Ward visited her house over the weekend.
“He doesn’t usually come to my house which makes me think he just came to find out what we know,” claimed the accused’s mom.
After court, the accused’s mom and Sulnita’s mother Sally Manho had a long talk and even embraced before going their separate ways.
Manho said she doesn’t have bad feelings toward the accused’s mom as they were both suffering.
The case was postponed to June 9.
