Cape Town - A man’s skull was broken after he tried to save another person from two alleged robbers.
Eben Pheiffer, 39, is recovering in Tygerberg Hospital after an operation to repair his skull.
His family say they are living in fear because friends of his suspected attackers allegedly threatened them.
This comes after members of the community assaulted the suspects on Saturday in Bot River.
An eyewitness who asked to remain anonymous says he saw Pheiffer being beaten by two men who were later joined by another man.
“They hit him behind the head and when he fell lights out to the ground, they continued hitting him and also stabbed him,” said the 29-year-old.
The attackers left a bleeding Pheiffer in a pool of water in the street.
Meanwhile, people followed the suspects to a nearby spaza shop where they were assaulted.
Eben’s brother James Pheiffer, 50, said he tried to stop the mob from hurting the suspect.
“A witness pointed the one suspect out. He had blood on his face, I don’t know if it was my brother’s blood,” he said.
According to James, friends of the two men have now threatened his family.
“We feel unsafe but if they come we will defend ourselves,” said James.
Lieutenant -Colonel Andre Traut said: “Two cases of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm in connection with the two assaults have been opened, but no arrests have been made yet.”
