Kimberley – An official from the Sol Plaatje Municipality, who was allegedly stabbed by her colleague at the traffic department in Phakamile Mabija Street about two weeks ago, has opened a charge of attempted murder against her co-worker.

The official returned to work last week after recuperating from her injuries and is now fearing for her safety after her colleague was released on bail.

Both officials are employed at the Sol Plaatje Traffic Department where two women became involved in an altercation where one official was stabbed in her head, ear, chest and fingers, on April 11.

She was admitted to hospital for medical treatment and received several stitches.

Staff members claimed that no efforts were being made to protect them following the incident.

They added that the official, who was stabbed, had to return to work on Friday, but was fearing another attack.

Spokesperson for Sol Plaatje Municipality Sello Matsie said that the internal investigation was still ongoing.

“We consider the matter in a serious light. It is not expected for blows to be exchanged and stabbings to take place in a professional working environment. The necessary precautionary measures have been taken to ensure the safety of all staff member.”

He, however, stated that they (the municipality) did not consider it to be necessary to keep any official away from their desk at this stage, until labour relations processes were finalised and guilt was proven.

“We will allow due processes as well as the criminal investigation to take its course.”

Police spokesperson, Captain Olebogeng Tawana, confirmed that the suspect was arrested and charged with attempted murder.
