Local historian, Professor Harold Herman invites the public to come out to the Coachman’s Cottage Museum in Andries Pretorius Street, Somerset West, this Heritage Day on Tuesday September 24.
The public are invited to the Coachman’s Cottage Museum, on the corners of Victoria and Andries Pretorius streets, Somerset West, this Heritage Day to learn more about the local history of the Helderberg towns.
The museum, under the expert guidance of its chairman, local historian, Professor Harold Herman, will host a photographic exhibition of the history of the Helderberg Basin on Heritage Day.
Professor Herman says the focus will be on photographs and maps of the Helderberg Basin – Somerset West, Gordon’s Bay, Sir Lowry’s Pass, Raithby, Firgrove, Faure, Macassar and Sandvlei.
A new feature will be a detailed history of Sir Lowry’s Pass, research on Sandvlei, a new book of stories of residents of Macassar by Clint Abrahams, the history of the VGK Church of Macassar by Dr C Flaendorp and photographs of the farms on the northern side of the Helderberg Basin – Zandvliet, Vergenoegd Lӧw and Meerlust.
The museum will also present exhibits to commemorate the 190th anniversary of the Somerset West Methodist Church and the people of the Methodist Missionary precinct.
The exhibition will run from 10am to 3pm, and free tea/coffee and snacks will be served. All visitors are welcome at this National Historical Monument.
