Guarded lockers are now available at Muizenberg Beach.
Muizenberg Beach now has guarded security lockers, giving visitors a safe place to store their belongings.
The lockers are inside the blue hut at Surfer’s Corner.
Launched on Saturday January 18, the lockers can be hired for R35 an hour, R120 for four hours and R220 for a full day. The service is cashless, with payments accepted by card and mobile apps.
"The lockers will be open daily from 7am to 5pm, though these hours may be adjusted after the holiday season ends in March," said Angela Gorman, chairwoman of the Beach Hut Trust.
"We’ll review the service based on demand. It's a completely new system, so time will tell.“
Beachgoers can either reserve lockers in advance or use them on a first-come, first-served basis.
“There will be plenty of lockers, and most users will only need them for an hour or two. For those interested, we also offer daily, weekly, and monthly bookings, with special rates for regular users or large groups,” Ms Gorman said.
The lockers are designed to hold phones, keys, wallets, sunglasses and other small personal items.
Ms Gorman said that if there was enough demand, larger lockers could be considered for the future as well as the installation of more lockers at East Beach near the lifesavers and water slides.
A full-time security guard would watch the lockers and assist those using them, she said.
Locals have already praised the initiative.
"This idea should be on every beach," said Nicky Newman while Lauren Burley Copley said it was "a brilliant concept" that could work well at Fish Hoek Beach too.
The Beach Hut Trust is also offering beach umbrella rentals.
Ward councillor Izabel Sherry said: "Let’s see how it works in Muizenberg, and, hopefully, we can have it at all the beaches in the peninsula.“
