Durban’s uShaka Marine World is mourning the loss of Kelpie, its oldest male dolphin, who passed away early on Thursday morning. Kelpie, an Atlantic bottlenose dolphin, celebrated his 41st birthday in January and was a beloved icon at Sea World (that later became uShaka Marine World)
Born at the old South Beach aquarium, Kelpie was the first dolphin to join the Sea World dolphin family. Over the years, he became a symbol of ocean conservation, captivating and educating more than 20 million visitors from across Africa. Known for his enthusiasm and gentle nature, he played a crucial role in fostering a deep appreciation for marine life.
For the past few months, Kelpie had been under the dedicated care of uShaka Marine World’s animal care specialists and veterinary team as he received geriatric treatment. While his passing was not unexpected, it has left a profound sense of loss among staff and visitors alike.
A full necropsy will be conducted later this week by Dr Francois Lampen, clinical veterinarian at the South African Association for Marine Biological Research (SAAMBR), to determine the exact cause of death.
Expressing his condolences, SAAMBR CEO Dr Larry Oellermann said it had been an honour and privilege to have shared in Kelpie’s life.
“My thoughts go out to all SAAMBR staff, both past and present, who have worked with and fallen in love with Kelpie. We know too that his passing will bring sadness to the hearts of millions of people in all corners of the world who were inspired by this beloved gentle giant. Our thoughts are with all of you. It has been an honour and a privilege for all of us who shared Kelpie’s life,” said Oellermann.
