The funeral service of Guru Krishna Naidoo, of the Sathie Sanmarka Sungum (SSS), will be held in Dunbar Avenue in Asherville today from 10am to 2pm before proceeding to the Stellawood Cemetery.
Guru Naidoo was the spiritual head of the SSS. He died on Tuesday at age 77.
His parents were Kistnasamy and Chinma Naidoo. He was the ninth of 14 children and was born breached with a veil.
His spiritual knowledge - inherited through prayer, dedication, meditation - drew congregants to the SSS, which was formally established in 1969.
In a tribute on after.io, a free online obituary website, Dr Rajendran Govender, the Commissioner at the Cultural, Religious, and Linguistic Rights Commission, described Guru Naidoo as a "guiding light in Hindu dharma".
"... His departure is not just a loss to his family and close disciples, but to the entire Hindu community in South Africa and beyond. Guru Krishna was a beacon of wisdom, devotion, and unwavering dedication to the promotion and preservation of Hindu Dharma.
"Like a mighty banyan tree that provides shelter and strength to all who rest beneath it, he nurtured the spiritual growth of countless devotees across generations. His teachings resonated deeply with both young and old, as he possessed an extraordinary ability to communicate profound truths with simplicity, warmth, and clarity.
"From humble beginnings, the Sathie Sanmarka Sungum flourished under his leadership, growing into a formidable spiritual institution with many branches across the country. His vision and commitment ensured that the principles of Sanatana Dharma remained accessible, relevant, and deeply embedded in the lives of his followers.
"His presence was not confined to South Africa alone. His influence and teachings reached across the globe, inspiring many in their spiritual journeys... Guru Krishna was the embodiment of this truth — his life was an open scripture, teaching through example, unwavering in his dharmic path, and ever radiating kindness and compassion. His words and actions resonated not as mere doctrines but as living expressions of divine wisdom.
"While his physical form may no longer be among us, his legacy endures in the hearts and minds of all who had the privilege of knowing him. His teachings will continue to illuminate the path for generations to come, much like the eternal flame that never ceases to burn."
Saroj Naidoo wrote: "Words can't describe how thankful my family and I are to our Guru. Guru Krishna Naidoo has been the driving force in our family. He was always there, taking us under his wing, sharing his faith and teaching us that through prayer anything is possible. We will forever hold you close to our hearts and you will never be forgotten."
Dolly Naidoo wrote: "What an amazing soul and spiritual leader. A rare gem. He will forever be in our hearts. A humble and devoted soul, who gave his life to serving humanity. May his soul reach Moksha and his legacy live on. Om Shanti."
