FOR almost a decade, Shridika Devi Davenarian, has remained dedicated to uplifting the lives of others through her community work.
“It gives me immense satisfaction and joy knowing that I can bring a smile to someone’s face or ease their burdens.”
Davenarian, 22, of Tongaat, said she started volunteering at 14 years old.
“I was in Grade 8 when I became involved in active community work by being a member of the InterAct Club at Tongaat Secondary School, which was sponsored by the Rotary Club of Umhlanga. My interest was sparked when I saw how the club was actively supporting those in need. I was deeply inspired by their dedication to service and making a difference in the lives of the less fortunate.”
Davenarian, who is also a member of the Rotaract of Tongaat, said over the years she had been involved in many outreach projects.
“Witnessing the struggles of the community motivated me to step up and assist in any way I could. I helped during the water crisis when Tongaat residents went without water for days, even a month at a time. I also assisted with the distribution of meals and other donations following the floods that greatly affected our community.
“In addition I have been involved in the “Cuppa for Cancer” fundraiser, collecting uniforms and stationery for underprivileged pupils, running a hamper drive, helping during a feeding programme at a children’s home, and participating in beach and school clean-ups,” she said.
Davenarian, a beautician, said the youth played a crucial role in building a better society.
“I strongly believe that the youth have the power to transform and reform mindsets, as well as bring about positive change in communities.
“Also, when the youth engage in service, they stay away from idle habits and develop a sense of discipline and responsibility. Some of the biggest challenges facing our youth of today are drug abuse, bullying, vaping, and teenage pregnancy. To overcome these issues, it’s important for young people to stay busy and occupied with positive activities like community service and to surround themselves with supportive friends,” she said.
Davenarian added that her inspiration was her father.
“My father taught me that helping others is not just a duty but a way of life. He believed that when you help others selflessly, blessings will always come back to you. His values instilled in me the importance of ‘service above self’.
“My goal is to reach as many people as possible, working hand-in-hand with my team to spread happiness and make a positive difference in our community. Where there is a need, I believe, there must be a deed,” she said.
Davenarian said she encouraged the youth to develop a strong, disciplined and focused mindset.
“You should know what you want out of life and make choices that align with your goals. You also have the power to shape your own destiny by making the right choices every day.
“I believe journaling your thoughts and aspirations can help you stay focused and motivated. Getting involved in service clubs will also lead you to make a difference,” she said.
