DISCOVER the inspiring journeys of blood donors who have made significant contributions of a 100 pints or more to saving lives. From personal motivations to the impact of their donations, these stories highlight the importance of blood donation in medical emergencies

Seenavasan Munien Naicken, 65, of Chatsworth, said he started donating blood in his early 30s.  He donated his 100th pint of blood on June 8.

“At the time, I was inspired when the blood bank visited my workplace. After hearing about how you could save a person’s life, I was encouraged on that day to donate blood for the first time. I have not stopped since then.

“Being a donor has brought me inner joy and a sense of fulfilment, especially when I think about how many lives I have possibly saved so far. I believe donating blood is crucial because it provides a vital resource for medical treatments, surgeries, and emergency situations, which ultimately save lives. I also consistently encourage others to donate,” he said.

Tony Subramony, 65, of Ballito, said he started donating blood after he needed a transfusion 35 years ago.

“I had sustained severe injuries after a horrific fall down a flight of stairs due to being intoxicated and required a blood transfusion. It was from that time that my entire life changed, especially knowing that someone saved my life with their blood. At the start of my recovery from an alcohol addiction, I made a promise to myself that I was not only going to remain sober, but also become a blood donor.

“To date, I have donated over 100 pints of blood. I donate at least four times a year. I feel absolutely grateful that I can donate blood and be able to save lives. I also always encourage friends and family to donate,” he said

Jay Ramnarain, of Chatsworth, said he started donating blood at age 18.

“We had a blood drive at my university campus and I decided to donate. I have not looked back since then and have donated 116 pints of blood to date. By donating blood, I feel I am able to help others, which is something I have always wanted to do. Knowing that I can save up to three lives is inspiring. It also motivates me to keep fit and maintain a healthy lifestyle.

“I encourage my family and friends to donate if they can. I believe we can all make some positive impact in the lives of others, even by donating blood,” he said.
