As excitement builds ahead of the Hollywoodbets Durban July at the Greyville Racecourse on Saturday, 5 July 2025, the South African Police Service (SAPS) and various security agencies have indicated that they will be on high alert, having meticulously planned for weeks to ensure a safe and enjoyable event.

With a blend of police officers and security personnel deployed both inside the stadium and throughout the city, law enforcement is prepared to tackle any disturbances that may arise.

Police will monitor proceedings closely, emphasising that the event is one of celebration and entertainment. Attendees are encouraged to enjoy the festivities responsibly, protecting their valuables and enabling a safe atmosphere for all.

In light of the anticipated crowds, it’s imperative that attendees are vigilant. Those consuming alcohol should arrange for drop-offs and pick-ups, or utilise the available public transport options. A stern warning has been issued: anyone caught drinking and driving will face arrest.

The SAPS urges that proper precautions are taken to avoid theft, especially as opportunistic criminals may be in the throngs of excited spectators. Please ensure that valuables are never left unattended.

Prohibited items and parking guidelines

Safety is paramount, and in order to facilitate a safer environment, several items are strictly prohibited from entering the stadium:

  • No sharp instruments, including knives;
  • No firearms;
  • No bottles;
  • No alcohol.

Those planning to drive to the event should be mindful that parking is limited. Attendees are encouraged to embrace public transport wherever possible. For those with pre-purchased parking tickets at the golf course, access will only be available from DLI Avenue coming from the city. Early arrival is highly recommended to mitigate delays owing to traffic congestion at parking gates. Motorists should also exercise caution—locking their vehicles, securing all doors and windows, and refraining from giving car keys to strangers or car guards. Valuables left in cars should be removed to prevent opportunistic theft.

Traffic management measures

The city also gears up for a busy weekend, with visible police presence on the roads surrounding the Greyville Racecourse to manage traffic flow. Road users are advised to plan for alternative routes during the event, as several road closures will be in effect from late Friday until the conclusion of the horse-racing event on Saturday. Main thoroughfares affected will include DLI Avenue, Avondale, and Gladys Manzibuko. Residents should be prepared for modifications to their routes, with closures on Haden and Avondale Roads, along with additional disruptions on Mitchell Crescent, 5th and 6th Avenues, and Clarence Road.

With the anticipated influx of visitors, it is crucial for the public to stay informed and remain flexible in their travel plans to avoid delays. The vibrant atmosphere expected at the Durban July stands to bring not just excitement for horse racing fans but also an engaging experience of music, fashion, and culture.
