FATIMA Mohamed Randeree, a Bachelor of dental therapy student at the University of KwaZulu-Natal’s (UKZN) School of Health Sciences, has received the esteemed Malegapuru W Makgoba Scholarship - one of the university’s top undergraduate honours.
The scholarship is named in honour of Professor Makgoba, UKZN’s first vice-chancellor and principal, and is awarded to the top five undergraduate students proceeding from first to second year in each of the university’s four colleges.
Randeree said: "I feel elated and honoured, but above all, incredibly grateful for this opportunity.”
The Durban-born student credits her family, friends, and faith for keeping her grounded and motivated.
“My family and friends were over the moon. My parents were and still are very proud. My friends have been so supportive. Loads of excitement and congratulatory comments poured in. It was a heart-warming reminder of how loved and supported I am on this journey.”
For Randeree, the scholarship means more than financial support.
“It’s a vote of confidence from those who believe in my potential. It continues to motivate me, especially as the workload becomes more demanding. On a personal level, it also feels like a gift to my parents who have been such a great support to me.”
Her ambitions reflect a deep commitment to both clinical excellence and compassionate care.
“Once I graduate, I plan to gain hands-on experience in the field, ideally working alongside mentors who can help refine my skills. Long-term, I dream of opening a practice that’s not only focused on dental health but also creates a calm, comforting space for patients.”
She is also driven by personal values rooted in her Islamic faith.
“Islam teaches the value of kindness, sincerity, and service to others. These are qualities I try to carry with me in both my studies and in the way I care for people.”
Her message to fellow students is one of perseverance and sincerity.
“Be passionate and stay disciplined. There’s a beautiful Arabic saying: ‘He who strives, shall find.’ I believe that sincere effort, with the right intentions, brings success in all areas of life.”
She extended thanks to the funders of the scholarship, adding, "I hope to make you proud and prove that your investment in my education was worthwhile."
A proud daughter of KwaZulu-Natal, Randeree comes from a large and close-knit family of five siblings.
“There’s always something happening, and it makes life feel full and joyful,” she shared.
Outside the lecture halls, Randeree is drawn to the creative arts, with a special interest in photography and videography.
“I love capturing light, smiles, nature - anything that makes me pause and appreciate beauty.”
Her story is one of academic brilliance, heartfelt gratitude, and a clear vision for a future dedicated to healing, service, and human connection.
