ASPIRING filmmakers are encouraged to participate in the Durban 48 Hour Film Project, an international competition set to take place from October 10 to 12.

Nerusha Maharaj Sadapal, the city producer, who runs the KwaZulu-Natal chapter of the competition, said teams are challenged to create a film of about five to seven minutes, over the weekend.

She said every film would be screened at Suncoast Cinecentre.

“The winning film will go on to represent the chapter internationally, competing against filmmakers from more than 140 cities worldwide.”

Maharaj Sadapal said this year the competition was all about inclusivity.

“We are inviting schools, religious organisations, corporates, youth, the aged, the deaf, the blind community, everyone, to take part. Film is a platform to be heard, and we want everyone’s story told. Durban’s filmmakers, both young and old, seasoned and new, are invited to take the stage, pick up a camera or a mobile device, and tell their stories.

“We are also excited to see business organisations like the KZN International Business Association sponsoring the registration fees of underprivileged schools to participate in the filmmaking extravaganza. This shows collaboration and the importance of supporting youth in their creative journey and giving them an opportunity to be exposed to the film industry.”

Maharaj Sadapal said ahead of the competition, a filmmaking workshop would be held at the Natal Command Site on October 7.

“The workshop is open to team leaders eager to learn, whether students, mobile filmmakers, or seasoned creators.”
