TWO bodyguards, a medical doctor, attorney, and a regional manager for a supermarket chain have been arrested as part of the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Transport's ongoing #NenzaniLaEzweni Operation.

According to a recent statement on the department's Facebook page, the Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) team arrested two bodyguards from the Ray Nkonyeni Local Municipality.

"They were travelling alone without the deputy mayor, who was in a full council meeting. The two bodyguards are facing charges of reckless driving, illegal use of blue lights, impersonating a police officer, and for carrying a firearm without a firearm licence," read the statement.

The official BMW X5 was impounded, and the vehicle's blue lights were confiscated as evidence.

In addition, three other motorists were arrested for excessive speeding and reckless driving.

The were: a medical doctor driving at 181km/h in a Ford Ranger Raptor; an attorney travelling at 175km/h in a VW Golf; and a regional manager for Checkers travelling at 170km/h in a white Toyota Corolla Cross.

In the statement, Siboniso Duma, the MEC for Transport and Human Settlements KZN, welcomed the cooperation from the Ray Nkonyeni municipal manager, who offered to ensure consequence management.

Duma has warned motorists ahead of the festive season that the #NenzaniLaEzweni Operation, and the RTI would have "no mercy".

"We are cleaning up our road networks, restoring law and order, and ensuring the safety of road users as guided by the National Traffic Act," said Duma.
