A SUSPECT made headlines not for his clever getaway, but rather for his futile attempt to flee law enforcement on Florida Road in Durban at the weekend.
A video of the man, who was allegedly drunk, attempting to flee was captured on video during a joint operation by the Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI), Durban Metro Police, and the South African Police Service as part of the ongoing #NenzaniLaEzweni campaign aimed at cleaning up the road network in KwaZulu-Natal.
In a statement on its Facebook page the KZN Department of Transport posted: "This guy was arrested - handcuffed and processed. Handcuffs were removed while he was being registered and all other admin procedures performed. He was also allowed to call a few people to get keys for his car before being taken to the cells. After almost an hour, he ran away and was fortunately caught as he was trying to start his car.
"As they were trying to get him out of his car, he tried to reach for something. Law enforcement officers had no choice but to use force to restrain and get him out of his car very quickly. After having pulled him out of his car, he resisted. He can be seen here screaming when they were trying to subdue him and started running away. Fortunately, they nabbed him. Well done Ma RTI Amahle."
The department said the man faced a litany of charges, including drunk driving.
MEC for Transport and Human Settlements, Siboniso Duma, paid tribute "to our energised RTI team, working with Durban Metro Police and SAPS as part of the successful execution of #NenzaniLaEzweni Operation. We are cleaning up our road network".
