AS THE world prepares to observe International Animal Rights Day on December 10, the Animal Anti-Cruelty League (AACL) Durban is appealing to the public to take meaningful steps to ensure the welfare and dignity of animals. This global event serves as a reminder that animals are sentient beings in need of care, respect, and protection.
The holiday season often poses a significant challenge for companion animals, with many pets suffering abandonment or neglect as their owners travel or impulsively gift them without considering long-term responsibilities. In light of this, AACL Durban is amplifying its campaign urging potential pet adopters to pause and reflect before making such a decision.
Dr Lawson Caine, AACL Durban Chairman, said: “I encourage people to really think before giving a pet. Make sure you have the means and time to give that animal the love and care it deserves.”
To support responsible pet guardianship, AACL Durban emphasises adherence to the internationally recognised Five Freedoms of Animal Welfare, which guide compassionate and humane treatment of all animals:
1. Freedom from hunger and thirst
2. Freedom from discomfort
3. Freedom from pain, injury, and disease
4. Freedom to express normal behaviour
5. Freedom from fear and distress
“When people apply the Five Freedoms to the animals they care for, we ensure that they have a better life, which often makes our own lives better,” added Dr Caine.
AACL Durban works tirelessly throughout the year to rescue, rehabilitate, and rehome animals in need across the greater Durban area. In recognition of International Animal Rights Day, the organisation is inviting the public to support its efforts through donations that directly fund veterinary care, shelter, and outreach programmes.
