TODAY marks the beginning of the Festive Season in South Africa with the much-anticipated Day of Reconciliation.
This significant day, which encourages healing and unity among diverse communities, finds its roots in a visionary idea first put forth by Paddy Kearney, the founder of the Denis Hurley Centre, in the 1980s. Following the liberation of the country, President Nelson Mandela embraced Kearney's innovative approach, transforming it into a deeply meaningful occasion that resonates profoundly within the heart of the nation.
In keeping with this spirit of togetherness, the Denis Hurley Centre invites all Durbanites to partake in the Annual Meal of Reconciliation - a unique event designed to foster community bonds and inclusivity.
As divisions persist in our city and beyond, this event presents an invaluable opportunity for individuals from all walks of life to come together, share a meal, and celebrate our collective identity. Homeless and housed individuals, South Africans and foreign nationals, people of every colour, faith, and generation are welcomed.
The celebrations commence at 8.30am. The main gathering for the meal will take place at 11am. Guests can indulge in an array of breyanis tailored to accommodate various religious preferences, ensuring that the culinary experience respects the diverse dietary needs of attendees. Participants are kindly encouraged to bring cakes and/or cooldrinks to share with their table of ten, amplifying the spirit of generosity and community.
For those driving to the event, parking is available behind the Cathedral for R25 cash or beneath theVictoria Street Market. There’s no need for reservations - simply turn up and be part of this remarkable gathering that embodies camaraderie and goodwill.
