THE police and KZN VIP security company have been deployed to Cornubia Industrial Park following threats of a business shutdown over alleged unfair labour practices.
Activist Ngizwe Mchunu allegedly vowed to bring industries to a standstill if workers' concerns aren't addressed, allegedly at Freedom Stationery.
Authorities warned that any disruptions would not be tolerated
In a post shared on Facebook, it is alleged that a person named “Ngizwe Mchunu” intended to shut down businesses starting from yesterday (Sunday).
“The purpose of the shutdown, according to Mr Mchunu, is to stop and publicise the unfair labour practices at many of the companies, but especially at Freedom Stationery (head office). Mchunu alleged that workers are unfairly fired and the working conditions are not in keeping with labour laws.”
According to the social media post, during a telephonic interview with Mchunu on January 8, he vowed to bring all the industries to a standstill if these labour issues were not resolved.
“According to Mchunu, he intends to hand over a memorandum to the management of Freedom Stationery, and wants a resolve on January 12.”
According to the social media post, in addition, residents of Phoenix and surrounding areas were urged to not panic, however, should it extend to the area, they need to “stand up and be counted”.
Speaking to the POST today (Monday), Gareth Naidoo, spokesperson for the KZN VIP Group, said they had not experienced any issues at present.
“The police, together with private security agencies, stand united against any individuals or groups who seek to disrupt business operations or damage critical infrastructure. Such actions will not be tolerated, and decisive measures are in place to ensure safety, stability, and continuity within the business community.”
