A VIRAL social media video showing eThekwini municipal employees grooming each other while residents wait in service queues has prompted an urgent investigation.
City officials have apologised and promised corrective action to prevent similar incidents that compromise customer service standards.
The video, which surfaced online last week, appeared to show a male employee having his hair groomed by a female colleague inside an office space, while members of the public waited in the service queue.
In a statement, the city said it viewed the incident in a serious light, noting that such conduct compromised customer service standards, workplace professionalism and the dignity of residents accessing municipal services.
It said management had moved swiftly once the video came to its attention.
“On becoming aware of the video circulating on social media, management immediately launched a formal investigation in accordance with disciplinary and labour relations procedures. The employees involved have been identified and appropriate administrative steps are currently underway.
"To prevent a recurrence, management has been directed to strengthen customer service protocols, ensure active supervision at service centres, and implement corrective measures. The conduct depicted does not reflect the city’s values or the standards expected of its employees. eThekwini remains committed to professionalism, ethical conduct, and delivering respectful, efficient service to all residents."
The statement said due process was being followed to ensure fairness and compliance with labour legislation."The city acknowledges the frustration caused and sincerely apologises for any inconvenience experienced."
