IN CHATSWORTH, law enforcers are sending a clear message: drunk driving will not be tolerated, even if shopping vouchers are on the table
In a surprising turn of events, a shopping centre manager was apprehended by the Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) in Chatsworth during a crackdown on drunk driving. The person allegedly offered the officers shopping vouchers in return for his freedom.
An accountant, operations manager, engineer, taxi driver, sales director and document controller were also arrested.
Over the past weekend, a total of 54 motorists were arrested in Chatsworth alone, as enforcement efforts intensified over Friday and Saturday nights. This included 50 drivers booked for driving under the influence and an additional three for failing to comply with the sobriety checkpoints.
In a statement on social media, Siboniso Duma, the MEC for Transport and Human Settlements, said as part of #NenzaniLaEzweni operations, the RTI worked jointly with Durban Metro Police and SAPS, and that operations would continue in various parts of KwaZulu-Natal.
#NenzaniLaEzweni is a hashtag associated with a series of ongoing, high-profile road safety and law enforcement operations in KZN, and aims to crack down on various road safety violations and illegal practices.
