PORT Shepstone Secondary School has reason to celebrate with its star pupil, 18-year-old Ethan Neil Naicker, emerging as one of the top 40 achievers in the National Senior Certificate (NSC) examination.

Ethan received a Bachelor's pass and placed first in quintile 4.

The NSC results release event for KZN high-achievers is being held this morning at the Durban ICC in which Ethan is attending.

He said he had been striving to do well from primary school and that his motivation had been his family, who are career-driven.

During his final schooling year, Ethan said he often took breaks between study sessions to manage stress, and he familiarised himself with concepts before they were taught in school.

"This left me with more time to do practice papers. Doing as many past year papers as possible is also key to checking how much you need to prepare. I found the examinations to be reasonable with some papers being more difficult than others."

His advice to this year's cohort of matric pupils is to be consistent.

"Matric is filled with tests, assignments and examinations. By working consistently, even putting in an hour of study every day, can go a long way to prevent being overwhelmed."

He aims to study medicine at the University of Cape Town and spealise in neurology.

"I want to hopefully make a meaningful contribution to the field and impact the lives of others in a meaningful way."
