AFTER receiving a life-saving blood transfusion before major surgery, Lotus FM sports presenter Bhavna Govender is now on a mission to encourage others to donate blood. Her powerful story of gratitude shows how blood donors can make a profound difference in someone's life.
Govender needed a blood transfusion prior to undergoing a major surgery.
“Receiving blood was a humbling and life changing experience. I realised I was able to have the surgery on the fact that someone donated their blood. I am grateful and would like to say to that person, whoever they may be, a big thank you,” said Govender, 40, of Shallcross.
She said in November last year, she had a blood transfusion to boost her iron levels.
“While I knew about donating blood from a young age, I was unable to due to my low iron levels and being underweight.
“Prior to my surgery, I was given three pints of blood, with each pint taking about four hours to be received in the body. It was a learning process for me, as I had to be calm and allow the blood to take its cause. However, the successful surgery took place the week after.”
Govender said there was always concerns when it came to the body and safety.
“I was slightly concerned when I was to receive blood, but you have the guidance from the doctors, nurses and the South African National Blood Service (SANBS), who are diligent and thorough in the necessary process with all the tests and requirements beforehand,” she said.
Govender said she now aimed to use her experience as an opportunity to encourage others about the importance of donating blood.
“I would like to be that ambassador and create more awareness on how blood donations matter and can save a person's life. I am also in communications with the SANBS to attend events and share my story.
“Furthermore, we fear needles, but it may be that a small poke and sacrifice can save someone's life. My advice to the others is to pay it forward, and encourage someone that you may know who is able and willing to donate blood. They can contribute to saving lives,” she said.
