WHEN Viren Bisambar introduced himself as a 'gangster' in an online Indian Singles Group, he faced ridicule and criticism.

Yet his unconventional approach to online dating appears to have worked, as his Facebook status now shows he's 'In a relationship'.

This viral story shows how an unlikely introduction sparked both community outrage and unexpected romance.

The appeal for a “beautiful Indian girl” began with: “Hi everyone my name is Viren I am a gangster. Looking for a beautiful Indian girl”.

Within minutes, the post went viral with Bisambar responding.

“Who the hell you people think you are disrespecting? I'm from Etete. Let's meet up and I will show you,” said Bisambar after he saw the ridicule in the comments.

One person replied, explaining to the other members where Etete was situated.

“I was from Etete. It I s near Groutville, close to Shakaskraal is it not? When I lived there, gangsters didn't exist. Now with all due respect, which girl in her right mind wants to be associated with a gangster, tell me? What kind of introduction is that, you are being ridiculed for that alone because honestly no one on this platform admires any type of gangsterism.

“Instead of getting angry, may I suggest that you rephrase what you just said. Maybe then, just maybe someone might respond to you but seriously I don't think so because you just said that you are a thug and that doesn't sit well with us. Because we are all law-abiding citizens here. Now I will have to ask all my cousins who still live in the area if they know a gangster by the name of Viren,” said the commenter.

Despite the unconventional introduction, the post sparked a lively debate on modern-day romance.

Bisambar’s advert may have worked because his Facebook profile now states, ‘In a relationship’.

As of now, Bisambar had not updated the group on who his “beautiful Indian girl" was.
