PHOENIX student Jared Michael defied extraordinary circumstances by achieving six distinctions in his matric exams while recovering from emergency surgery.
His remarkable journey from hospital bed to academic success showcases exceptional determination and resilience.
Jared, a pupil from Trenance Manor Secondary in Phoenix, was just a week away from his first matric exam paper, when he underwent emergency surgery at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli Central Hospital, a turn of events that would have deterred many.
However, not only did he persist, but he shattered expectations by completing most of his exams while in isolation at the hospital.
Jared's efforts did not go unnoticed. He attained six distinctions: 90% in English HL, 86% in mathematics, 85% in physical sciences, 84% in life sciences, 87% in accounting, and 85% in life orientation. He also achieved 75% in Afrikaans FAL.
“Jared has always excelled academically throughout his schooling career and has done us proud in spite of the trauma of his medical condition,” said the school's principal D Ramnarain.
“I am greatly indebted to Dr P Gramanie and Dr TP Nkosi from the Department of Education for allowing Jared to write and expediting the paperwork necessary. The hospital staff went beyond their call of duty in setting up the ward as an examination centre. I also salute our teachers who voluntarily invigilated while Jared was in and out of hospital. Their sacrifices and efforts are greatly appreciated.”
In reflecting on his journey, Jared emphasised the importance of dedication and hard work.
“I have always known what I wanted in life and worked conscientiously in order to achieve it. During my matric year, I dedicated time to my studies and often stayed up until the early hours of the morning. I never left studying for the last minute, so preparations began at the beginning of the year," he said.
His gratitude extended to everyone who supported him throughout this challenging period.
“My sincere gratitude goes out to my parents, family, friends, school, and tutors for constantly motivating and assisting me to reach my goals. Above all, I thank the Almighty for my achievements over the years.”
Looking ahead, Jared is set to pursue a career in chemical engineering at UKZN.
He also offered this year's batch of matric pupils: “Work consistently, reduce socialising, and take time off to relax.”
