NEWLY emerged dashcam footage shows a scholar transport vehicle overtaking dangerously before colliding with super link side-tipper truck, killing 12 schoolchildren.

The 22-year-old driver has been arrested and faces multiple charges of culpable homicide as community members call for stricter road safety enforcement.

Footage taken from the truck shows the scholar transport combi travelling in the oncoming lane moments before the crash.

From the footage, it appeared that the taxi could have avoided the deadly crash as other vehicles visibly slowed down to give the taxi driver a space to return to his lane.

In a separate video, another motorist who witnessed the incident shared his account.

“It overtook me and a few other cars, in front of me there were about four cars. I tried to reduce my speed to try and eliminate that from happening, so I could  give him some gap because we saw the truck that was approaching. He ignored that I don’t know why,” said the motorist in the video.

Despite these efforts, the scholar transport vehicle failed to return to its lane, resulting in the devastating collision.

Police have since confirmed that the 22-year-old scholar transport driver was arrested yesterday after he was discharged from the hospital.

He is expected to appear before the Vanderbijlpark Magistrate’s Court on 12 counts of culpable homicide and charges of reckless and negligent driving.

The footage has sparked widespread public reaction, with many community members calling for stricter enforcement of road safety regulations, particularly for scholar transport operators.
