WHEN matriculant Siasha Kumar took to the podium at the 2025 Excellence Awards for the Klipriver Circuit, under the uThukela District, on Wednesday, she thanked God for his peace and favour over her.
"I would not have achieved all of this without his grace," she said.
The 17-year-old, of Ladysmith Secondary School, matriculated with 7 distinctions and placed first in the circuit with a Bachelor's pass - a feat she described as overwhelming and humbling.
Life during her matric year, she said, had been challenging for pupils due to intermittent water and electricity in the area.
At the school's recent awards day, Siasha, the head girl, received the dux award and the highest distinction awards in her 7 subjects as well as an award for her platinum aggregate of 92.1%.
She will now study accounting science at the University of Pretoria.
"I have always been passionate about accounting and finance. Every organisation - churches, businesses, NGOs and governments - need accountants. Money has to be tracked, reported, and handled wisely. This means accounting skills remain in demand even when the economy is unstable."
While she takes this next chapter in her life, there will be a major change - she will be moving away from home and living at the university's residence.
"I am looking forward to making new friends and discovering a whole world I have been dreaming of, as well as greater opportunities and broader prospects that will enhance my skills and open international opportunities for me. But I surely will miss my family, friends, church community, home-cooked meals, and the comfort of home the most."
In the next 10 years, she envisions herself travelling and advancing further in her career, while also making a difference in the world and fulfilling her 'Kingdom purpose'.
"Beyond success on paper, I want to be someone known for integrity, resilience, and impact, using my skills to create opportunities not only for myself, but for others as well."
She said her inspiration came from her faith in God.
"I am fortunate to have parents of faith who model trusting and serving God. This has inspired me to believe God for the best in everything. My parents are my constant source of inspiration, showing good leadership and integrity, and serving as a reminder to always strive for excellence."
Her dad, Apostle Sajesh Kumar, and mom, Shantal Kumar, are pastors of Word of Faith Ministries in Ladysmith. She has two younger siblings, Shayil and Shayden.
Siasha advised the Class of 2026 to work hard and give off their best.
"Matric is overwhelming, but keep focusing on giving your best and trusting God with the rest. Remember this: your results will never define your worth, but your effort will shape your future. Show up every day, even when motivation fades. You are stronger and more capable than you think. Thousands have walked this path before you and now it’s your turn to leave your mark. Whether your dream is big, bold, or still taking shape, protect it fiercely and work for it daily."
Ladysmith Secondary School attained at 93.6% pass.
