CONSTABLE Sagar Nikesh Kara's unwavering dedication during bomb threats, drug busts and dangerous heists has earned him national recognition as South Africa's Reservist of the Year.

This Durban North SAPS officer's exceptional commitment to community safety is making a difference, even during critical staff shortages

Kara was honoured at the National SAPS Excellence Awards 2026 on Monday, which recognised and honoured outstanding performance, exceptional commitment to community relations, innovation, professionalism and acts of bravery within the SAPS.

The SAPS said Kara epitomised what it meant to be self-motivated - demonstrating unwavering dedication to public service and community safety.

In a statement on social media, the SAPS said his proactive approach to his role set him apart.

It said his readiness to step in during critical times, particularly during weekend night shifts when staff shortages arose, illustrated his exceptional work ethic and commitment to the policing community.

"His efforts have made a significant impact at his station. Over the years, Kara has played a crucial role in resolving and apprehending suspects in various serious cases, including bomb threats, drug confiscations, cash-in-transit heists, house burglaries, malicious damage to property, kidnappings, and even murder investigations. His high level of engagement with commanders and relentless search for ways to provide assistance exemplify his collaborative spirit and sense of duty.

"Colleagues at the station laud Kara for his discipline and his ability to work within the boundaries of the law. As an asset to the organisation, he has honed skills in monitoring and information gathering that result in successful convictions, further enhancing the community's safety. His achievements speak volumes not just of his actions but also of the discipline and camaraderie he brings to his team."

The SAPS said Kara goes above and beyond the call of duty, and his exemplary service not only brought honour to him personally but also inspired fellow reservists and police officers to strive for excellence in their own roles.

Kara shared modestly, when reflecting on his dedication to the job: “I’m always ready to help wherever I can."
