A NEW strategic partnership between Engage Connection and FLY VETIV'AIR will launch direct flights between Durban and Réunion Island from February 27, promising to boost tourism, strengthen regional connectivity, and deliver economic benefits to both destinations.
The 3-hour flight connects South Africans to a UNESCO-listed paradise while opening Durban to new international visitors.
This initiative promises significant benefits for both destinations, enhancing travel and encouraging cultural exchange.
Sadie Kandan, the marketing manager of Engage Connection, said: "The introduction and promotion of this air link is expected to have a significant positive impact on Durban’s tourism economy, generating increased visitor numbers, supporting local businesses, creating employment opportunities, and reinforcing Durban’s position as a leading regional gateway."
She said at the same time, the route opened a new window into Réunion Island, located near Madagascar and Mauritius.
"Reunion is a destination that remains relatively unknown to the South African market despite its exceptional natural and cultural offerings. It boasts dramatic volcanic landscapes, UNESCO-listed mountain cirques, lush forests, waterfalls, pristine beaches, and a unique blend of cultures, offering South African travellers a diverse, high-value destination just a short flight away.
"By connecting Durban with Réunion Island, this initiative not only strengthens regional ties but also promotes two-way tourism, cultural exchange, and long-term economic cooperation between Southern Africa and the Indian Ocean region. This collaboration reflects a shared commitment to responsible growth, destination development, and the creation of meaningful travel opportunities that benefit both markets."
Kandan said the 3 hour 15 minute direct flight would be available for travel agents and the public from Engage Connection. The inaugural flight is February 27.
"For the first three weeks, there will be 9 flights on schedule on a Friday, Saturday and Sunday, thereafter moving to a weekly Saturday departure. There will be seasonal additions of flights for the route."
The collaboration, she said, had been developed in partnership with key South African stakeholders, including Durban Tourism, Dube TradePort, King Shaka International Airport, and the KwaZulu-Natal Tourism & Film Authority, as well as other associated public and private entities.
"Together, these partners share a common objective: to stimulate travel demand, strengthen regional connectivity, and deliver measurable economic benefits to KZN."
Through its activities, Engage Connection works directly and indirectly in coordination with Global Aviation Operations, which operates under the trading names Lift and Global Airways.
