A DEPARTMENT of Correctional Services official has been suspended following the escape of Thulani Gcaleka, a dangerous prisoner serving a life sentence for attempted murder, rape and other serious crimes.
An investigation is underway as authorities mobilise resources to recapture the fugitive who escaped from Sevontein Correctional Centre near Pietermaritzburg.
The escape happened on Thursday at the correctional centre, which falls under the Pietermaritzburg Management Area.
Gcaleka was serving a life sentence for several serious crimes.
According to the department, a preliminary report showed that Gcaleka was part of a cleaning work team at the prison farm when he managed to escape.
DCS said an internal investigation had been launched to determine exactly how the incident happened. The department stressed that it would not tolerate any security breaches or failure to follow standard operating procedures.
“The outcome of the investigation will guide the necessary disciplinary action and corrective measures in line with the Correctional Services Act,” the department said in a statement.
DCS spokesperson Singabakho Nxumalo said the re-arrest of the escaped offender remained the department’s top priority.
“Anyone who may spot him or has information regarding his whereabouts is urged to immediately report this to the nearest police station or correctional facility,” Nxumalo said.
He added that all necessary resources have been mobilised to ensure Gcaleka's swift arrest.
