A DRIVER is recovering in hospital after a terrifying 100-metre plunge down a cliff in Oribi Gorge, following a tyre blowout on Monday.

Despite multiple injuries, she displayed remarkable resilience in escaping the wreckage.

According to information provided by the driver, she lost control of her vehicle about 5km from the N2 turn-off. Her vehicle then plunged down into the gorge and she managed to escape the wreckage by kicking out a window.

Despite sustaining multiple suspected fractures, the woman slowly and painfully climbed up the steep embankment to reach the roadside.

KwaZulu Private Ambulance Service arrived at the scene following reports that a vehicle had gone over the edge of the cliff. The driver was already at the roadside, being assisted by the police who found her while on patrol. She was in a serious condition and showed signs of trauma.

Paramedics stabilised her at the scene, treating multiple fractures and injuries consistent with a high-impact fall. She was then transported under advanced life support to a nearby hospital for urgent medical care.

Due to the depth and dense terrain, the vehicle was not visible from the road.
