EIGHT-YEAR-OLD Bruno, a pit bull-type dog, survived a gunshot wound after reportedly protecting his owner in Port Elizabeth.
The Animal Anti‑Cruelty League Port Elizabeth said the circumstances leading to the shooting remain sensitive and are under investigation.
The organisation described the emotional reunion between Bruno, a pit bull-type dog and his family.
"In animal rescue, there are few happy moments, but today's family reunion warmed our hearts."
Despite the bullet narrowly missing vital organs, Bruno survived and is now recovering.
An inspector documented the moment Bruno returned home to his relieved family.
"The whole family came running out to hug him," the league said. Veterinary support was provided for the injured dog.
Bruno's case has surfaced amid ongoing discussion in South Africa about animal welfare, responsible pet ownership and misconceptions around certain dog breeds.
In a recent IOL interview, Nicole Jack, founder of SerendiPitty Rescue, addressed breed mislabelling and public fear.
"In this country, we don't really have pit bulls; we have pit bull‑type dogs. Any dog that has a box head is often classified as a pit bull and just mislabelled," she said.
She also urged owners to look beyond headlines and sensational stories when considering dog behaviour and risks.
"Any animal can attack; it doesn't matter what it is. Until people actually go and look at the dog and see it for themselves."
Her work with SerendiPitty Rescue focuses on rehabilitating dogs that have suffered severe neglect.
"These dogs come from severe neglect. They deserve love."
She went on to say that with proper training, socialisation and care, many pit bull‑type dogs can be loyal and affectionate companions rather than threats. Jack also warned that behavioural issues often stem from inadequate handling and irresponsible ownership rather than inherent aggression and urged potential owners to research a dog's needs before bringing one into a home.
