CHILDLINE KZN is appealing to businesses, families, schools and residents to join their annual telethon fundraiser in aid of counselling and child protection services for vulnerable children across the province.

The telethon, from 9am to 2pm on February 20 and 21, will assist in raising much-needed funds as they continue to face financial pressure due to a reduction of donor funding and rising operational costs.

“Amid our challenges, we are faced with an increasing number of children seeking help. We also have a high demand for the 116 toll-free counselling line, limited funding for counsellor salaries, outdated equipment and technology, and emotional strain on staff who deal with abuse and trauma cases daily.

“Despite these challenges, Childline continues to provide lifesaving support to children in crisis. The telethon is vital to the sustainability of Childline’s services. It ensures that the 116 toll-free helpline remains operational, children have access to professional counselling, and victims of abuse receive support and protection,” said the organisation’s director, Adeshini Naicker.

She said their goal was to raise as much money as they could to contribute towards counselling services, staff costs, and operational expenses for this year.

“Annually, the telethon funds the operation of the 116 toll-free counselling line, trauma and abuse counselling for children and families, court preparation and victim support services, school and community prevention programmes and the training of counsellors and volunteers. It also funds core operational costs such as salaries, communication, and equipment.

“Anyone can pledge. Pledges start from R100 with no maximum limit. Donors can choose to make a once-off donation or a monthly pledge to support Childline on an ongoing basis.

“Childline is also inviting volunteers and participants to assist with making fundraising calls and encouraging pledges. This offers community members and corporate teams a meaningful way to take part directly in protecting vulnerable children. Every call answered and every child helped depends on community support."

Donations are tax deductible.

She said donations made before February 28 counted towards one's 2026 tax assessment.
