THE SAPS has initiated an urgent manhunt following a break-in at the Ulundi K9 Unit where criminals made off with multiple firearms, including an R5 assault rifle, and over 400 rounds of ammunition.

Police spokesperson Robert Netshiunda described the security breach as 'a serious matter' as authorities work to track down the suspects.

Police said the break-in was discovered on Monday morning, February 16, by an officer who reported for duty at around 5:30 am.

He allegedly noticed that the door to the logistics office was open.

Upon further inspection, it was found that the back door had been forced open.

The stolen items include four pistols, one R5 assault rifle, 13 pairs of handcuffs, three empty R5 magazines, six empty pistol magazines, 152 rounds of pistol ammunition, and 290 rounds of R5 rifle ammunition, police said.

“We are working around the clock to identify the suspects. Security breaches of this nature are taken very seriously, and we will leave no stone unturned in our investigations,” Netshiunda said.

He added that the SAPS was also reviewing its internal firearm security procedures to determine whether there was any negligence in safeguarding the weapons and ammunition.

“The safety of our officers and public remains our priority,” he said.

Authorities have urged anyone with information that could assist the investigation to contact their nearest police station or call the Crime Stop number on 08600 10111.
